Job Summary

The Cultivation Genetics Technician provides hands-on operational support for HQ Propagation and R&D cultivation operations, executing daily workflows related to propagation, genetics handling, breeding support, pheno-hunting projects, and cultivation trials. This role serves as a skilled technician responsible for maintaining quality control, accurate documentation, and operational consistency across genetics-focused operations.

The Cultivation Genetics Technician works with a higher degree of autonomy than a standard Cultivation Specialist while maintaining close coordination with the Cultivation Genetics Lead. This role requires strong attention to detail, adaptability across multiple project types, and the ability to independently manage assigned tasks within HQ and R&D operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Propagation & Genetics

  • Execute all aspects of propagation: cloning, seed germination, and transplanting
  • Maintain mother plants: pruning, feeding, and health monitoring
  • Support seed introduction projects: intake, cataloguing, germination testing, nursery care
  • Assist with genetic retention programs: tissue culture support and backup clone management
  • Execute breeding support: pollen collection, cross-pollination, and seed production
  • Support pheno-hunting projects from seedling through harvest
  • Assist with flower trials: setup, environmental monitoring, data collection, harvest documentation
  • Coordinate plant movement between HQ and R&D operations
  • Maintain genetic tracking systems and inventory records

Environmental & Facility Operations

  • Monitor and document environmental parameters: temperature, humidity, CO2, ventilation
  • Support water quality management and nutrient delivery systems
  • Assist with lighting setup, adjustment, and maintenance
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, equipment, and tools
  • Follow plant scheduling to project plant needs and resource requirements
  • Report environmental discrepancies or equipment issues immediately

Quality Control & Compliance

  • Maintain QC measures per state/local laws
  • Adhere to company policies and SOPs
  • Ensure accurate labeling, tracking, and inventory organization
  • Inspect plants for disease, deficiencies, insects, and mold; report concerns
  • Maintain operational logs, cultivation records, and trial documentation
  • Keep work areas organized, clean, and compliant

Cultivation Operations

  • Clone, trim, prune, top, and train plants as directed
  • Support plant management, fertilization, pest/disease monitoring, and sanitation
  • Catalogue and track plants clone-to-harvest using track-and-trace system
  • Clean equipment and tools regularly
  • Document nutrient and substance applications
  • Support cultivation and harvest teams as needed

Training & Communication

  • Assist with training new team members on SOPs and workflows
  • Promote sanitation practices and biosecurity procedures
  • Communicate project status, inventory needs, and operational issues to leadership
  • Support team organization and operational efficiency

Minimum Qualifications

•    Minimum 1-2 years of cannabis cultivation or horticulture experience.
•    Experience with propagation, mother plant maintenance, cloning, or cultivation operations.
•    Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
•    Ability to work independently while maintaining close coordination with Lead.
•    Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities across different project types.
•    Strong communication skills and ability to document work accurately.
•    Able to follow detailed instructions and capable of performing repetitive tasks.
•    Must have a positive attitude and work well with others in a team environment.
•    Willing to learn about, operate, and maintain facility equipment in a safe manner.
•    Comfortable with heights, soil, water, and tight spaces.
•    Ability to safely climb, squat, bend, twist, kneel, and stand for at least 8 hours per day, and lift up to 50 pounds.
•    Willing to get respirator fit tested and conduct IPM applications as needed.
•    Must be 21 years of age or older, and able to successfully register with the state's cannabis commission as an agent.
•    Must comply with all laws, regulations, and policies associated within the industry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with breeding, pheno-hunting, or R&D cultivation projects.
  • Experience with tissue culture acclimation or genetics inventory systems.
  • Familiarity with cultivation tracking systems and operational reporting.
  • Previous experience in a regulated production facility (food, beverage, CPG, etc.).
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of plant structure and horticulture.

Physical and Mental Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position, move and/or position oneself, communicate, operate and/or prepare, place, position objects, tools, or controls. The employee must occasionally move packages weighing up to 50 pounds. Able to stand for 90% of the time. Comfortable with heights; occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to service lights, filters, trellis netting, and ceiling fans up to 25 feet. Comfortable working atop and traversing scaffolding, when required. Comfortable with changing environment temperatures and humidity. Exposure to pollen, dust, dander, and other nature elements. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close observation and the ability to adjust focus. Working Environment

Work is performed in a warehouse/cultivation environment. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
